Enter the language model: our preferred zombie. “Just a next-token predictor.” A wonderfully small description of a vastly complex neural network. “Just neurons firing” rarely seems to settle the human case.

This doesn’t establish that a model feels. It asks what would justify ruling it out. A difference in machinery? In organisation? Or simply in who gets the benefit of the doubt?
